Mission Myanmar's success expected to enhance Indo-Myanmar ties

June 11, 2013: The recent initiative by Imphal's Shija hospital of sending a 12-member medical team to Myanmar is expected to cement ties between both nations.

Dr. Kh. Palin Singh Chairman cum Managing Director, Shija Hospital and Research Centre said, "Shija hospital is targeting medical tourism .In India's Look East policy Manipur has a strategic location bordering Myanmar. Manipur has a good healthcare delivery system, weather, natural beauty etc. We are projecting Manipur as a healthcare hub in South-East Asia.

 

Mission Myanmar is a combined effort of the Union Republic of Myanmar, Indian Consulate in Mandalay and Smile Train Shija Cleft Project to eradicate the problem of cleft lip and palate in Myanmar.

 

The Manipur Government is trying to boost the health tourism sector and establish the state as a hub for healthcare services.

 

In four days, the team performed 103 surgeries on 87 patients at the Monywa General Hospital in Sagaing.

 

Manipur's Chief Minister O.Ibobi Singh, who was on a trip to Myanmar to promote business links, visited the hospital and offered to sponsor the next Mission Myanmar.

 

He also proposed the construction of a 100-bed hospital on the PPP model at Monywa.

 

Manipur is considered India's gateway to South East Asia and can serve as a means to promote better relationship with neighbouring countries.
